A presentation of Anastasia Kavada (Senior Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Westminster) and Ursula Dimitriou of Studio Synthetica in This Is Not a Gateway Festival 2013 at the Bishopsgate Institute on “Spatialities of revolt and democratic governance: Indignant movement in Syntagma Square.”
Using film material from the Indignant movement in Syntagma Square (Athens) in the summer of 2011 and based on an inter-disciplinary perspective (urban design, social movements and media) this presentation explored the spatial dimension of social movements and the relationship between space, communication and political participation. Is the occupation of public squares producing a new kind of ‘public’ in urban centres? How do these principles shape and are turn shaped by the online and offline spaces occupied by the movement? How do commercial and state pressures limit the uses of these spaces for social movements?
